services that are fast, consistent and available wherever their
subscribers are located. To improve return on infrastructure
and spectrum investments, operators also must find ways to serve
more subscribers and carry more data across their existing networks.

Venturi’s Adaptive
Airlink Optimization™ is a cross-layer technology that

Transport Optimization versus Compression
Because of their latency, high packet loss and variable bandwidth,
wireless networks offer a less than optimal physical environment
for TCP, the transport protocol upon which most Internet applications
are built. TCP typically reacts to common wireless network conditions
by generating heavy and erratic traffic flow, resulting in inefficient
utilization of the available bandwidth.
Variable radio frequency
(RF) conditions can significantly impact the behavior of TCP over
wireless networks. In areas with poor signal quality, interference
and/or high load conditions, a subscriber’s performance often degrades
dramatically. As a result, mobile data users frequently experience throughput
speeds that are a fraction of the bandwidth available to them. Users also confront
inconsistent performance in different locations or at different times of the
day as network conditions fluctuate.
Solutions that primarily utilize compression technologies to increase
wireless connection speeds do not solve the wireless network problems
of high latency, high packet loss and variable bandwidth. While compression
reduces the volume of data transmitted, it does not improve the efficiency
of data transport over wireless networks.

Transport optimization improves the performance of 2.5G,
3G and 4G networks. While 3G and 4G networks offer a larger “pipe” for
data than 2.5G networks, they still do not provide an ideal
environment for data transport. In fact, application efficiency
is lower in 3G+ networks, since the effective throughput
is much less than the available bandwidth.
As network sophistication
increases, transport optimization contributes a greater
proportion of overall optimization benefit. In 3G networks, for example,
transport optimization contributes to a 50 - 75% performance
improvement when compared to compression only.
