Wireless Industry Veteran Bret Sewell
Joins Venturi Wireless as President and CEO
Former
Vodafone and Ericsson Executive Tomas Isaksson Also Joins
Venturi's Board of Directors
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 5, 2005—Venturi
Wireless, a global provider of 3G mobile optimization solutions,
today announced that Bret Sewell has joined the company
as president and CEO. Sewell will leverage more than 20
years of wireless industry and international management
experience to strengthen Venturi's position as the leader
in wireless data optimization solutions. In addition, Tomas
Isaksson, former CEO and chairman of the management board
at Vodafone Netherlands, has joined Venturi's board of directors.
"Venturi's optimization solutions
are a critical component in helping wireless carriers drive
the adoption of 3G mobile data services. Bret has a strong
track record in building successful businesses around breakthrough
technologies such as Venturi's. He brings a deep understanding
of the carrier market and an international viewpoint,"
said Alex Mendez, a member of Venturi's board and founder
and general partner of Storm Ventures, an investor in Venturi.
"We are also excited to have Tomas Isaksson join our
board. He's a highly-respected leader in the European wireless
community who will bring in-depth operator knowledge and
experience as well as invaluable connections to the Venturi
team."
A veteran of both Fortune 500 and startup
companies, Sewell previously served as president of SnapTrack,
Inc., a $50 million company that created the high-precision
location-based wireless services market. Sewell pioneered
SnapTrack partnerships with DoCoMo, KDDI, Sprint, Verizon,
Alltel, Bell Mobility, SK Telecom, KT Freetel, China Unicom,
and other carriers, as well as with wireless equipment manufacturers
such as Motorola, Texas Instruments, Samsung, LG, NEC, and
Alcatel. He was instrumental in worldwide deployments that
have resulted in more than 130 million SnapTrack-enabled
wireless devices and supporting infrastructure. SnapTrack
was acquired by Qualcomm for $1 billion in 2000. Earlier
in his career, Sewell was the managing director of the Asia
Pacific Divisions of Aspect Telecommunications and Octel
Communications. He was president of Octel's Japanese subsidiary,
which developed Octel's largest telecommunication carrier
customer worldwide, J-Phone (now Vodafone K.K.).
Sewell joins Venturi during a period of
rapid growth. The company recently announced the expansion
of its optimization solutions for the fast-growing multimedia
handset market.
"Venturi is delivering a unique solution
that is fundamental to the success of 3G mobile data services,"
said Sewell. "For carriers to gain broad consumer acceptance
of them, these services must be fast, reliable, and consistent.
Carriers also need to have an attractive return on their
3G investments. Venturi's optimization solutions ensure
the best possible subscriber experience while helping carriers
maximize the return on their infrastructure investments.
Venturi has the potential to be part of every wireless data
subscriber's experience, and I look forward to expanding
the global reach of our technology as more carriers and
handset providers implement our solutions."
New Venturi board member Isaksson,
a 27-year veteran of the international telecommunications
industry, spent 11 years at Vodafone, the world's leading
mobile telecommunications company. Most recently, he was
chief executive and chairman of the management board of
Vodafone Netherlands, a subsidiary of the Vodafone Group.
During his tenure at Vodafone, Isaksson was also chief executive
of the Americas Region and president of Vodafone Global
Platform and Internet Services, as well as the chief executive
officer of Europolitan Holdings AB, a Swedish mobile operator.
Prior to Vodafone, Isaksson spent 16 years at Ericsson,
a world-leading provider of telecommunications equipment
and related services to mobile and fixed-network operators,
most recently as president and chief executive officer of
Ericsson Radio Systems Inc. Isaksson has served on the board
of directors of many companies, including Europolitan Holdings
AB, Verizon Wireless, and Telecel.
